4) Islam and Sustainability

Image
Today's lesson focused on how sustainable development is perceived from Islamic perspectives, mostly how Islam has always instilled the concept of sustainability even before the establishment of UN's SDG. In my view, the connection between the Sustainable Development Goals and Islamic teachings is deeply rooted in shared values and principles. Both frameworks aim to promote justice, equality, and the well-being of all people, reflecting a common vision for a harmonious and sustainable world. As Muslims, we are entrusted by Allah to take care of the Earth, not exploit it. This means we must protect and preserve the environment, ensuring that natural resources are used wisely and sustainably. This principle aligns perfectly with modern notions of environmental sustainability, where careful management of resources is crucial to maintain ecological balance.  Allah SWT has created this earth for His servants to thrive in, giving us an environment to fulfill our needs as human beings...

3) Framework of Sustainable Development

Image
Our class started off as usual, with Sir Ali taking our attendance and the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah before going over our lesson. We learned about the framework of Sustainable Development and how SDG was first formed by the United Nations. The idea of having global strategies have been talked about ever since 1972, where governments have actively addressed the issue on human environment. Since then, there were many conferences held and conventions created to solve these issues. Things like Kyoto Protocol and the Johannesburg Declaration were just some of the attempts for society as a whole to take a step further to a sustainable life. I was surprised to know that there's actually a different set of goals that were established before the existence of SDG and that is MDG, also known as Millenium Development Goals. The MDGs, established in 2000, focused on eight specific targets primarily addressing poverty, health, and education with a 2015 deadline. In contrast, the SDGs, adop...

2) Current Developments

We continued our lesson with developments, focusing on what's happening in Malaysia. Sir Ali showed us pictures of the issues that Malaysia face when it comes to sustainability, mainly the water crisis that are happening. Water pollution is a pressing issue that affects every corner of our planet and it's heartbreaking to see our precious water resources, which are essential for life, being contaminated by human activities. There are still irresponsible people throwing trash into any body of water, or companies disposing chemicals into connected river banks. Thankfully, the government has been finding many ways to solve this issues, and upon my further research, it was recorded that our country has achieved 43% of the established SDGs. Still, there are lots of ways that could be improved, especially amongst its citizens. Water pollution isn't the only thing that is still considered a crisis in our country, as there are still lots of cases regarding racism and discrimination...

1) Intro to SCSH

Image
For our first class, Sir Ali had taken time to get to know each and every one of us in his class by taking attendance and asking questions like where we were from and what course we are in. The small icebreaking session was very entertaining, and we all got to know each other better before the start of our lesson. He asked us if any of us knew about Sustainable Development before taking this subject, to which most of us had raised our hand including me. Personally, I had heard about SDG through the Economy class I'd taken during my time in CFS, but I never delved deeper than the surface level of it. This subject was offered to students so that it could increase their knowledge of sustainability and its importance. Not only that, we could also develop attitudes, values, and skills as we face these issues as well as incorporating Islamic morals and perspectives on sustainable living. These are the assessment that we'll be completing for this subject. It'd be a lie to say that...

Introduction: My Reflective Journal

Image
Assalamualaikum! My name is Sophea Qistina, my matric number is 2412124, and I created this blog to write down the various experiences and things I will be learning in my SCSH 1201 class. I am a first year ENCOM student and I'm from Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. This is my first time writing in a blog so I am both excited and nervous of the outcome. I am still trying to get used to the new environment of the Pagoh Campus, but my studies had helped me familiarize myself with the layout of KSTCL's buildings.  I decided to take Sustainable Development for this semester as I am very interested with the SDGs that were established by the United Nations. Everywhere I look, there are so many problems like pollution and poverty. I realized that if we don’t start taking care of our planet and our communities, things will only get worse. For example, I have friends that are from low-income families, and seeing them juggling between finance and their education made me feel determined to help in an...
