4) Islam and Sustainability
Today's lesson focused on how sustainable development is perceived from Islamic perspectives, mostly how Islam has always instilled the concept of sustainability even before the establishment of UN's SDG. In my view, the connection between the Sustainable Development Goals and Islamic teachings is deeply rooted in shared values and principles. Both frameworks aim to promote justice, equality, and the well-being of all people, reflecting a common vision for a harmonious and sustainable world. As Muslims, we are entrusted by Allah to take care of the Earth, not exploit it. This means we must protect and preserve the environment, ensuring that natural resources are used wisely and sustainably. This principle aligns perfectly with modern notions of environmental sustainability, where careful management of resources is crucial to maintain ecological balance.

Allah SWT has created this earth for His servants to thrive in, giving us an environment to fulfill our needs as human beings. For example, in Surah Al-Anbiya ayah 32, Allah stated that: "And We have made the sky a well-protected canopy, still they turn away from its signs." This verse referred to the layer of ozone that He has created to shield us from the UV ray of the sun. However, we still lose a few percentile of ozone each year, and the increased thinning means the earth is losing its protective layer that Allah has put on. It's a reminder that we should be nurturing the earth and its resources instead of recklessly wasting such precious substances. Other than that, Prophet Muhammad SAW has always encouraged the practice of agriculture as well as animal herding, a prime example of the type of Khalifah we should strive to become. Those with strong Iman and faith to Allah SWT will always remember that this world is not long-lasting and that we shall conserve it as best as we can because He does not love those who corrupt the earth.
I really enjoyed today's class as it became a huge wake-up call for me as a Muslim. Achieving a sustainable way of living is something that is loved by Allah SWT and teaches me that by following His commands to care for this earth, I could create a stable life for myself and my loved ones as well as fulfilling my duties as His servant.
